The Water Wise Wine Country Garden was created by SBI Building & Landscape Materials, Garrett Ace Hardware & Gardenworks Inc in an effort to educate and demonstrate to the community gardening techniques that are 'water wise'. With Sonoma County facing critical drought conditions and expecting major water reductions this year, the 'Water Wise Wine Country Garden' intends to show citizens of Sonoma County how to meet the need to reduce landscape water usage and still create beautiful, affordable gardens.
This garden represents and alternative to large lawn gardes, and uses 30% of what a thirsty lawn would use. Visitors stroll through four themed ares, all of which are designed with a State of California approved 'low water usage' plants. The garden utilizes a wide variety of water conserving products and equipment, all available and affordable to customers.
The Water Wise Wine Country Garden uses: SBI's own biofiltration top soil, especiall formulated to filter and enhance infiltration as well as an organic mulch that lowers the moisture loss through evaporation and weeks. Semi-permeable paths and patios in the garden allow percolation of water to slow down the runoff of excess water into the storm drain system. Not only does the Wate Wise Wine Country Garden utilize a drip irrigation system to apply water at a low flow to help infiltration, it uses an Automatic Irrigation controller with budgeting capability and enhanced with Hunter 'SolarSync' to apply only the amount of water that is absolutely necessary and adjust the amount of water released by the irrigation depending on the weather.
